Who is Greta Thunberg?

Greta Thunberg was born on January 3, 2003, in Stockholm, Sweden. From a young age Greta was greatly immersed in the environment. Her early life was full with a deep interest and concern for the environment. This trait was nurtured by her parents, who supported their daughter as they were both advocates for climate action. Greta even as a child was greatly aware of the immense implications and consequences of climate change,. This realization was heightened due to her personal struggles with Asperger syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and selective mutism. At the age of 15, in August of 2018 Greta took a very important personal decisive step towards activism. This was her skipping school to protest outside the Swedish Parliament. She was only had her handmade sign that read “Skolstrejk för klimatet” (School Strike for Climate). But she was extremely determined and demanded stronger action on climate change. Little did anyone know at the time, but this was something that would soon change the world. Proving that no matter your age you can always create change. Thunberg’s solitary protest gained a huge amount of media attention. Her simple but powerful message resonated with young people around the world and deeply inspired everyone to also take a standThunberg’s solitary strike in August, further evolved into a global movement known as Fridays for Future. By December of 2018, she had inspired many students across the globe to join her in skipping school on Fridays to advocate for climate action. Her singular protest created a wave of interest and engagement in youth that was astounding. Many students related to her fight and were inspired to do the same. Greta’s activism has gained immense international  acclaim and prominence. Leading her to deliver speeches at various different major global forums. A key example being the United Nations Climate Action Summit in September 2019. Where her impassioned speech, including the famous line “How dare you?” captured the world’s attention once again. Though creating change, her activism has not been without controversy. Thunberg has faced criticism and skepticism from various sources. Including political figures and climate change deniers. However, her unyielding commitment to fighting for what she believes in has earned her a wide base of support and admiration. Through her activism she has become an extremely powerful symbol of youth-led climate activism. Greta has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. She has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. Once in 2019 and 2020. While also having received accolades from various environmental organizations. Her influence now extends beyond traditional media. As she has now uses social media platforms to inspire millions and foster global discussions on climate policy. In addition to her activism, Greta has authored books, including one titled “No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference”. Thunberg’s activism is driven by her personal belief that urgent and comprehensive action is necessary to address climate change and mitigate its effects.
